This spicy bean sprout salad is a simple yet flavorful side dish that brings together crunchy sprouts, nutty sesame oil, and a kick of seven-spice or five-spice seasoning. It’s fast, fresh, and perfect for serving with rice or grilled mains. The dish is ready in minutes but delivers layers of taste — from umami-rich soy to aromatic spice and toasted sesame.

Ingredients

  • 340 g bean sprouts
  • 2 Tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1.5 tsp soy sauce
  • 1.5 tsp shichimi togarashi (or Chinese five spice)
  • 0.5 tsp salt (or more to taste)
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp toasted white and black sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • chopped green onion or scallion (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. Add the bean sprouts and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Drain well to remove all excess water.
  4. In a large bowl, combine sesame oil, soy sauce, spice mix, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Add the cooked bean sprouts and mix thoroughly to coat.
  6. Top with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onion if desired.
